Petro Jacyk Postdoctoral Fellow Oksana Dudko participated in the online round table “Battle for Ukraine’s Past,” which wasorganized by the Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Ukraine at the University of Toronto on March 25, 2022. The round table discussed the importance of history and historical memory in Russia’s current war in Ukraine. The round table speakers were Lynne Viola, Professor of History, University of Toronto; Taras Koznarsky, Associate Professor, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Toronto; Serhy Yekelchyk, Professor of History and Germanic & Slavic Studies, University of Victoria; and Oksana Dudko, Petro Jacyk Postdoctoral Fellow in Ukrainian Studies at St. Thomas More College in Saskatoon.
During the round table, panelists discussed a number of questions: Does Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have anything to do with history? How can a historian talk about the Russian–Ukrainian war? What are the origins of historical myths in Putin’s ideology? Do you believe that Western scholars a priori accepted Russia’s historical myths and visions of the past while being more critical of Ukrainian ones?
