A new book on Canada-Ukraine relations has been published by McGill-Queen’s University Press. Canada and the Ukrainian Crisis analyzes Canada’s response under the Stephen Harper government to the crisis precipitated by the EuroMaidan. The book explores the factors at the international, national and individual levels that shaped the Canadian response, imbuing it with a sense of urgency. The argument made was that the response of the Harper government was in keeping with Canada’s commitment to defend the liberal rules-based order, treating the Ukrainian crisis as part of a wider struggle to defend liberal principles and values.
The book, authored by Prof. Kordan and Mitchell Dowie, was conducted under the auspices of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage and its Canada-Ukraine Relations initiative. The initiative is committed to documenting and researching the nature of Canada’s political relationship with post-independence Ukraine.
