Student Community Garden Launched!

A student-centered community garden at the University of Saskatchewan was launched with a planting event on June 6, 2015. In attendance were representatives of the Ukrainian Students’ Association (USUSA), Sustainability Education and Research Institute (SERI), and the School of Environment and Sustainability Students’ Association (SENSSA).

It is my pleasure to be a part of this exciting grassroots initiative, perhaps the first of its kind at the university. Just a few months ago it was but an idea. Now we have secured a parcel of land on the university campus, received seed funding for the pilot, and organized a group of enthusiastic individuals who are committed to the garden.

The purpose of the project is not only to produce fresh and healthy food, but also build a sense of community and further enhance our relationship with the environment via cross-departmental and cross-cultural connections.

The project was made possible through the support of the PCUH (start-up funds), STM College, Department of Biology, Arts and Science College (parcel of land), and the dedicated volunteer contribution of many individuals.
